Exposition:
Exposition is the introduction of the settings, characters, and time. The story takes places in Havana, Cuba where the main character lives in a shack near the beach. The shack is made out of sticks and guano, and is located next to a place called the Terrace. The main characters are Santiago, an old fisherman, and Manolin, a young boy. To Manolin, Santiago is like a father, and the two are very close. It is said that in the book it's September, and it is indicated that this all takes places around the time of Joe DiMaggio.
Why does Santiago want to catch the fish?
Santiago wants to catch the fish for two reasons. Reason one is to prove that he is not a fool, and regain his pride. “They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry (page 17).” Though he didn't act angry, he wanted to prove them wrong. The second reason he want to catch the fish is to prove that he is no so old. When Santiago does not want help its shows that he doesn't want to viewed as weak or old. For instance, “He brings our gear himself. He never wants anyone to carry anything.” Those are the two specific reasons for Santiago wanting to catch the fish.
Symbolism
Lions
Lions usually represent something strong, fearless, in charge etc. Lions are predators and hunter, and so is Santiago. The lions represent Santiago in his dreams, because he wants to be like them, strong, the "head honcho". Also lions are strange and unique creatures, just as Santiago and the marlin are. For example, “I am a strange old man.” and “He is wonderful and strange and who knows how old he is, he thought.” He does prove himself to be like a lion by fighting to get the fish for three days straight.
Baseball
In "The Old Man and The Sea" Santiago and Manolin talk about the Yankees, especially Joe DiMaggio. It is very important because keeping track of baseball is a hobby for both Santiago and Manolin. Baseball was first introduced to Cuba by college student coming back from America in the 1860s. It spread and became very popular. Although Cuba made its own league, many people followed American baseball instead. To Santiago Joe DiMaggio and the rest of the Yankees are practically gods. The two of them look up to DiMaggio as a hero. An example of this is how Santiago always calls him great, “The great DiMaggio is himself again (page 35).” The Yankees and DiMaggio are Santiago's heroes.
