“Night” by Elie Wiesel
Character Analysis
As you read the story “Night” and explore what the Holocaust was keep a log of important characters as they are discussed in the text. Identify as much as you can about the person i.e. who they are, their role in the story, their relation to Elie, their age, occupation, outlook, etc.
Character Analysis are due Thursday, April 17th - NO LATE WORK FOR "NIGHT" WILL BE ACCEPTED OVER OR AFTER SPRING BREAK!
CHARACTERS:
1. Elie
12 year old religious Jewish boy. Is later freed/liberated by American troops
After book:
Wins Nobel peace prize
2. Elie’s father
His name is Schlomo. He died from sickness.
3. Franek
Franek was the one who wanted Elie's gold crown and when he does not get it, he beats up Elie's father.
4. Gestapo
The Gestapo are police officers, however, they are not trained. They are the local police who are enforcing Hitler's reign.
5. Idek
Idek is the foreman at the depot and he is technically a bully towards Elie and Elie's father and he hooks up with a Polish girl.
6. Juliek
Juliek is a voilin player and he gets killed for playing Beethoven on the violin.Meets Elie in Austwitz and is killed for playing beetoven on the violin.
7. Kapos
Nazi soldiers
8. Madame Schachter
A crazy woman who was separated from her kids and wife. She warned them of the flames/chimney.
9. Moshe the Beadle
Town clown/hobo. He is Elie's mentor in religion.
10. Meir Katz
Elie's father's friend. He saved Elie from strangulation.
11. Dr. Mengele
Checks everyone coming into the camps and chooses who will survive. Known as the "Angel of Death"
12. Rabbi Elahou (and sons)
Rabbi Elahou is the Jewish prisoner whose son abandons him and he plays a role in Elie's life by not doing what his Elahou's son had done.
13. SS Officers
Shoo and Stople are German soldiers at the camps.
14. Stein
A relative of Elie's family. He gives them food and advice, and Elie gives him hope.
15. The dentist
He is Jewish and he let Elie keep hai gold teeth.
16. The French Girl
The French Girl works in the depot with Elie and she advises Elie to keep in his anger and she has fake papers that pass her as Arian and she tells Elie that she is Jewish by speaking in German to him.
17. Zalman
One of Elie fellow prisoners, he was trampled to death
18. Tzipora
Elie's sister
19. Tibi and Yossi
Two brothers who lost their parents and live for each other.
20. Akiba the Drummer
He tries to keep hope alive, he is very strong in his faith, and he is the most optimistic. He seems to haave challenged Elie to keep his faith.
