Racism
What is Racism?
Racism is believing that one or more races/social groups (religion, sexuality, beliefs, etc.) is inferior to another; Racism could also be making fun of another race/group by steryotyping and generalizing.
EAMPLES OF RACISM IN SOCIETY:
Past (1940-1960) and Present (200-2014)
Give a brief description of each event/incident. What happened? When did it happen? Why did it happen? Who was involved? Provide 3-5 images of the event and those involved. How does the event display racism? What is your opinion of the event/incident? Could it have been handled differently? What were the after affects of the event/incident?
In the 1940s, an issue of Batman Chronicles, Bob Kane, creator of Batman and the artist for this series, drew African American waiters more as animals than humans. This may have been due to the fact that in the 1940s, many white people believed black people not to be humans, calling my 'dirty apes'. The waiters in this issue of Batman #13 have unordinarily large lips and monstrous hands, and all of the black waiters were depicted like this, looking the same way.
This is racist because it implies that all African Americans look the same and look like animals, and that is steryotyping and making false claims anout blacks. Most comic book creators and authors at the time did not openly discriminate or stereotype, but it is clear that this changed when someone decided to portray the waiters in this way. Though many people were openly racist, authors avoided using racism as to not lose readers. I speculate whether Bob Kane had direct involvement or not. I do not know that this was Bob Kane's direct decision, but I think that it is possible that he was racist, since they're are never or very rarely any black characters in Batman.

In New Mexico, on December 17, 2013, a teacher allegedly told an African American high school student to take of a Santa Claus hat and beard. Now, that might seem completely appropriate until her reason is disclosed. The teacher told Christopher Rougier, a ninth-grade student in Rio Rancho, N.M, to take off the Santa hat during a holiday party because of Christopers color. The teacher told him Santa is white not black and to take the hat and beard off. Christopher was so ashamed that he claimed he will never touch a Christmas decoration again. The teacher was only put on administrative leave.
This story clearly shows how real racism still is in our society today. Distinguishing a persons race by in this case, how Santa Clause is portrayed in the world. In most drawings, pictures, and such always depict Santa as being white. That does not mean he cannot be another race or color. The teacher went way out of line and I think should of been given a worse punishment for what he said. Santa Clause can be any race or ethnicity that person portrays him as. It is not secluded to him just being white.
