The Outsiders Pre-Reading: Ponyboy’s World
Ponyboy, the narrator of The Outsiders, explains what life is like for teenagers in his world. You may be able to draw parallels between Ponyboy’s world and your own. Think about each item listed below. Then describe a related situation or event from your own world in the space provided.
Ponyboy’s World
1.) Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped.
Outside, if you walk alone at night you can get robbed.
2.) When you grow up in a tight-knit neighborhood like ours you get to know each other really well.
In my neighborhood and school. We are a small group and have been with each other for years.
3.) Organized gangs are rarities- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together.
I don't know of any gangs in Chatsworth, just groups of friends who loiter and graffiti.
4.) They were the only kind of girls that would look at us, I thought. Tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much.
We only really talk to private school girls, not public school girls.
5.) Two-Bit- he doesn’t really want or need half the things he swipes from stores. He thinks it’s fun to swipe everything that isn’t nailed down.
I don't need to eat 24/7, but it's fun and I'm always hungry.
6.) Sodapop and Steve get into drag races and fights so much- both of them have too much energy, too much feeling, with no way to blow it off.
I have a lot of energy and do sports to blow it off.
My World
1) It is dangerous for kids or young adults to walk alone due to all the crimes happening
The Greasers get jumped a lot when they are alone.
2) My neighborhood is quite small and everyone has seen each other
There aren't many Greasers in their neighborhood and their kind has to stick together.
3) In my class we have our own group of friends we are almost always with
Ponyboy and his friends always stick together.
4) Specific groups of guys pick up specific groups of girls
Private school guys usually associate with other private schoolers.
5) Classmates like to swipe things from people desks to keep or use, but usually fun
We steal pens and erasers to mess with people.
6) Me and my friends have plenty of energy and feeling that we blow off by being ourselves
At lunch we blow off our energy by yelling.
